Western Digital Corporation now shipping the world’s first 10 TB hard drive in the HGST Ultrastar He10. The new He10 is a helium filled drive features perpendicular magnetic recording which will provide lower power consumption per TB (56% less power consumption per TB) compare to traditional air-filled HDDs. Western Digital aimed this drive will be needed for people with media and cloud based application business.
Corporation Like Netflix seems to be interested about it, Netflix’s director of content delivery architecture David Fullgar Says “We’ve been using the HGST HelioSeal drives for a long time and not only do they give us more capacity, they have contributed to a lower overall power envelope and higher storage density, which has allowed us to maximize our data footprint and create a network that is optimized for TCO.”
The Ultrastar He10 also come with highest reliability rating features, it has impressive 2.5 million mean times between failure rating and also included a five year warranty. The Ultrastar He10 comes with both 6Gbps and 12Gbps SATA and sas version and also have the features like Instant Secure Erase (ISE), Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) options. This new drive features 256MB data buffer @ 7200rpm rotation speed. The transfer rate of Ultrastar He10 249MB per second with seek time 8 millisecond, average access latency is just about 4.16 millisecond. Power consumption of He10 is just 6.8 watt during operative and 5watt when idle. The pricing are not known yet but we can assume the He10 won’t be cheap.
