Introduction

Western Digital is a big name in the hard drive market for years and after buying the solid state storage giant- SanDisk they have become a big player in SSD market also. Even though the company is selling SSDs under its SanDisk brand name, in 2016 WD decided to launch a new series of SSDs under its WD brand name with similar classifications as their HDDs with WD Green, WD Blue, and WD Black SSDs. Like its HDDs, the WD Green SSDs is focused on the budget segment, with WD Blue SSDs for balance and the WD Black towards performance.

Today we are going to take a look at the WD Blue, which comes in 250GB, 500GB, and 1TB. The WD Blue 250 GB has sequential transfer speeds of up to 540 / 500 MB/s for reads/writes and random 4K performance of up to 97,000 / 79,000 IOPS for reads/writes. The WD Blue SSD has an endurance rating of Up to 1.75M hours MTBF and comes with a 3-year warranty, but its specified by terabytes written (TBW) endurance rating, so technically, if you write too much data to the drive, you could void the time left on the warranty. WD Blue lacks support for AES 256-bit hardware encryption. But they support DevSLP (Device Sleep) with the 1TB SSD that has a power draw of between 6.0 and 9.7 mW, compared to 70mW for average active power. Let’s see how the SSD performed in our testing.
